Chorlton Portrait Project- Passers-by during the Covid-19 Lockdowns
On the 23rd March, the UK entered it’s first nationwide lockdown. Everything stopped overnight, the majority of people told not to come into work and everyone restricted to only one hour a day outside. Due to the heavy restrictions, things people had always taken for granted (walking the dog, popping to get milk) suddenly become something to consider and plan.
The pattern of many people’s lives had also suddenly and radically changed, in both positive and negative ways. Getting very bored very quickly, I set up a wooden backdrop in my front yard and asked passers-by to stop for a moment and have their portrait taken (from five metres away…).
There was a great response, and I took over a hundred portraits. I also asked everyone to email me with their experiences of living under lockdown to add to the project.
I restarted the project during the second national lockdown in November/ December, again asking for participants to email in their thoughts and stories.
